proofreading

Proofreading is a separate service from novel assessment. A novel assessment deals with matters such as plot, characters, pace, theme, point of view and suspense. If you want to get your novel in good shape as a work of literary art, a novel assessment should be your first port of call.

However, if you are at a later stage in your writing and editing, and want to make sure that your manuscript is technically as good as it can be, then proofreading is the way to go. A proofread will pick up on common errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation before submitting to an agent or a publisher. It will also be useful before self-publishing on a platform such as Amazon's KDP, before submitting work to a competition, or before ordering bound copies of your work from a service such as Ingram Spark.

A proofread will pick up problems with:
  • punctuation
  • spelling
  • grammar
  • hyphenation
  • capitalization
  • paragraphing
  • line formatting
  • dialogue layout
  • comma usage
  • apostrophe usage
  • ...and many other small technical matters.

Please contact me for details of assessment and proofreading of non-fiction works.

Your manuscript will be assessed in 3-6 weeks and returned to you electronically as a Track Changes document. This is a document marked up using Word's system of annotation and comment, which appears both in the text and in the right-hand margin. The advantage of Track Changes is that the document can be seen simultaneously as the original and the edited version, and changes can then be accepted or rejected. If you have Word, no other software is needed. For more information on Track Changes, please have a look at this external page.

fees for proofreading

Some manuscripts need only light proofreading. Some need more detailed attention. For that reason, it is impossible to give general outlines on price. Manuscripts must be assessed on a case-by-case basis. For guidance, though, the proofreading service costs around £30 per hour.

For a quotation on the cost of proofreading your manuscript, please fill in the form below and attach your manuscript. This is a free quotation. Please refer to our privacy policy for your right to confidentiality.
